This Summer I went on a group tour of the design facilities at the North Carolina Museum of Art. My group consisted of students from different design backgrounds. We met with the Design Director and one of the designers in her department. They showed us all the work they put into the museum’s brand kit and all the templates they have ready to go for any given project. They have layouts prepared for social media, exhibits, advertisements, and even signage; having these prepared ahead of time makes it easy for museum workers to create their own material in case the situation arises. The staff members told us about their personal experiences that led to the idea of implementing such design techniques. I learned about the process of working with artists to display their art, as well as problems and solutions that can come up in case of a difference in vision. Problem-solving is a big part of the design team’s job, and they are always working to make sure that staff and guest experience is as seamless as possible.
